Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the problem of garbage generation worldwide and the necessity of having a sustainable future. Waste is generated by various sources, which is why it is extremely necessary to adopt an effective waste management approach to reduce its adverse impact. But the real challenge is the sheer volume of garbage produced. Within the framework of Industry 4.0, the paper explores AI-based waste classification systems that make use of robotics, the Internet of Things (IOT). Examples of the potential impact of AI include applications like deep learning and predictive analytics. Evidence from the reviewed literature indicates that AI-based waste classification systems can achieve classification accuracies of up to 99%, AI-driven route optimization can reduce operational costs by approximately 25–35%, interoperability-enabled smart collection systems can improve collection efficiency by up to 40%, and optical AI sorting technologies can achieve approximately 95% sorting accuracy under controlled industrial conditions. Simultaneously, Industry 4.0's integration of robots as its foundation and IOT-enabled technologies open significant opportunities for advancement. It also pinpoints various obstacles to smart waste management, including limited resources, lack of awareness/skills, resistance to change, interoperability, and security concerns. Additionally, mitigation remedies and tools for these challenges contribute to effective waste management.
